A1237 (f/k/a A4260)

PLEASE help pass this very important bill that would set precedence for the humane treatment of wild parrots all over our country!

Offer your support of NJ Bill # A1237!

Edgewater Parrots needs your help with sending letters to the NJ Agricultural and Natural Resources Committee, in support of Bill #A1237, (which calls upon the committee to remove the wild Quakers from the NJ list of "potentially dangerous species")

You CAN make a difference! These letters are even MORE important than signatures on our petition. Legislators will be looking at letters from both local constituents and other states to determine whether the bill will be passed into law...and to determine how important this issue is, not only locally, but nationwide!

If we can get this bill passed NOW, we can prevent the possibility of horrific killings of our NJ birds and prevent them suffering the same fate as the wild Quakers in CT. (We are all aware that all utility companies communicate and attend seminars together-if we can stop this from happening here in NJ, or anywhere else, we must try!)

This law will set precedence for the humane treatment of wild parrots all over the country!

Your letters can make a difference!

PLEASE ask visitors to your websites and recipients of your newsletters, friends, etc. to write a letter in support of NJ bill #A1237 (calls upon NJ legislators to remove wild Quakers from a list of "potentially dangerous species") and send the letters ASAP to:

Douglas H. Fisher, Chair
14 East Commerce St.
3rd Floor
Bridgeton, NJ 08302

For your convenience, I have attached a sample letter that you can copy and paste to use to make it even easier! Just insert your personal information, and you're ready to print and mail! (see "SAMPLE LETTER" below my signature)

Apparently, the Committee votes even before the bill is read in Trenton, so we need to act NOW and get the support of the Committee before it is too late.

As Margaret Meade said, "Never doubt the ability of a small group of dedicated citizens to change the world.
In fact, it is the only thing that has."

Be a part of that change! Send your letter today and encourage all of your friends, co-workers and e-mail contacts to do the same!

I want to thank you all, in advance, for your efforts to save Edgewater's wild Quakers.

I wish you all, and your family and friends, a happy and a healthy New Year!

Fondly,

SAMPLE LETTER:

Chairman

Re: Bill #A1237

Dear Assemblyman Fisher:

This letter is to express my support for Bill #A1237, asking to remove Monk Parakeets (aka Quaker Parrots) from the list of potentially dangerous species in New Jersey.

(Note: insert whatever relationship or knowledge you have about Monk Parakeets here) e.g:
I have the good fortune of residing in a town that has a breeding population of wild Monks. Having had a chance to observe them and communicate with wildlife experts, it has become increasingly obvious to me that the birds' legal status is unjustified.

I ask that the committee please examine why the birds were originally proscribed some 30 years ago and whether the current law and regulations are appropriate in light of what is now known about them.

If Bill #A1237 is passed, it will allow the borough and private citizens to develop alternate nesting arrangements for the birds that they are currently prohibited from doing. It will also lead to a more productive relationship with the utility company, PSE&G, since PSE&G's only recourse currently is destruction of the nests, eggs, and unfledged birds. Finally, and most important, it will prevent the indiscriminate, unnecessary killing of the birds that recently happened in Connecticut.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Respectfully,
(Your name here)

If people could also write to each of the members of the Committee, that would be even better!

The link to the website for the Committee and their contact info can be found at:

http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/committees/assembly.asp
and click on the links to the members of the Agricultural and Natural Resources Committee.

Thanks for your efforts on behalf of our beloved parrots!
