Thumbs up Celebrate Italian Winter Solstice in Edgewater, Dec. 17

Come celebrate the darkest night of the year with Italian Christmas revels and musical exorcisms! Celebrate the Italian Winter Solstice with Alessandra Belloni and I, Giullari Di Piazza performing the SPIDER DANCE The Mystical Power of the Tarantella Sunday-December 17- 5o'clockpm at the Church on the Edge First Presbyterian Church, 710 Undercliff Avenue (near Sterling Place on north side of Rt. 5) Alessandra Belloni and company are performing this benefit concert for the church. Rev. Dr. Wanda Lundy is pastor of the congregation. Suggested donation is $20/person. Invite you to give a gift of attending this performance...a performance which will remembered forever!

Alessandra Belloni, signature series artist of REMO World Percussion Tambourines, is an internationally renowned percussionist, singer-dancer who
just has returned from a tour in Italy. She and the company will be inaugurating artist-in-residence with this performance, an Italian Winter Solstice Celebration, with excerpts from THE SPIDER DANCE. The summer performance at St. John the Divine was to a sold out audience.

The dance will feature a fusion of ancient melodies, instrumentation, and dance exorcisms with modern electronic dance beats. The wild ecstatic dance known as the Tarantella was originally performed on both the summer and winter solstice. Masked Dancers gathered around the famous tree known as Benevento to celebrate the darkest night with a musical exorcism to expel the evil spirits and welcome the rebirth of the bright light for the new coming year.

Nothing like a pagan ritual to start the Christmas season with a bang.

Yes, it does seem a bit New Age-y for a Christian community.

I'm going. If it's good enough for Mithra, it's good enough for me.

Mithra is the ancient sun god, who was also born on Dec. 25th. It was a good day for a birthday, in spite of all those people who complain about getting "single gifted."

...thanks for the interest in winter solstice.....the birth of light...Yes, and what a celebration it is to move from darkness to light. In hopes of giving a resource which you may not have seen, and since it is difficult to speak at length with all who have asked....what's a winter solstice and who does it....I invite you to check out this web site: www.religioustolerance.org/winter_solstice.

As we approach the shortest day of the year in anticipation of the light crowding out the darkness, I invite you to dance and sing revelling in the gift you open in yourself..the gifted and the giver! Enjoy your 'birth-day' everyday.
