Oury Contract Under Review

Fort Lee to review contract with counsel under U.S. probe

FORT LEE The Borough Council will discuss in July the future of Dennis Oury's employment as the municipality's special counsel for economic development.

Oury's six-month contract as attorney for the borough's Office of Economic Development will expire Monday. The council decided Thursday in closed session to address the issue next month.

"All attorneys serve at the pleasure of their client," Borough Attorney Lee Cohen said Thursday. The governing body "will take up [Oury's appointment] in the normal course at a July meeting," he said.

Oury has been the borough's special redevelopment attorney since he was appointed by Mayor Jack Alter in 2001. This year, however, he received only a six-month contract when he was reappointed during the borough's January reorganization meeting.

Oury's fee as counsel is $150 an hour. His total fee could not exceed $22,500 in his current contract. He has received the same fee since he was appointed.

Federal prosecutors, including the U.S. Attorney's Office, are investigating Oury as part of an examination into the defunct Governmental Grants Consulting LLC, a grant-writing company. The firm was a partnership among Oury, Bergen County Democratic Organization Chairman Joseph Ferriero and Leonard Kaiser, executive director of the Bergen County Utilities Authority, according to David Spatz, a fourth partner who also was president of GGC.

Oury is legal counsel for the county Democratic organization. Ferriero and Oury provided the start-up money for the company, Spatz said.

Several municipalities and agencies, including Fort Lee, were subpoenaed last month by U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie for information about Oury and GGC.

Oury lost his position as borough attorney in Bergenfield and in Paramus this year.

Re: Oury Contract Under Review

So Fort Lee is getting nervous? Can Edgewater be far behind?
