Borough provides update on progress on Cliffside Park Towne Center

CLIFFSIDE PARK - The slow progress of the Cliffside Park Towne Center on Anderson Avenue has continued to frustrate residents and business owners all over the borough and many are asking for answers. Often referred to as "the giant hole in the ground," this property has become an eyesore to many residents and store owners.

Preparations for this 13-story complex began as far back as 2006 when the borough condemned a dozen properties through eminent domain in downtown Cliffside Park to make room for the Towne Center.

In previous articles in The Citizen, it was reported that reasons such as a slow economy and poor weather conditions have slowed its progress.

Over the years, the borough website has provided information on this project; however, completion date has been pushed back many times with the current one at October 2015.

Back in 2010, a statement was released to The Citizen by the late Mayor Gerald Calabrese stating that progress was being made. "After many years of planning, I am delighted, that in spite of a slow economy, substantial progress is being made to making this project to reality. The start of this project is the culmination of many years of hard work and countless hours of work from many dedicated individuals."

Five years later the project is still not completed.

Spokesman for the borough William Maer explained that although the project is moving forward, the recent crane accident stalled its progress.

The borough is currently waiting on an engineer to restore the crane and continue the work on the parking garage said Maer.

"The site work was a lot more challenging because of the amount of rock needed to be removed from the site," said Maer. "However, we are still optimistic and excited to continue this project."

On the Cliffside Park website, a weekly update on the Towne Centerís progress was posted starting in March 2014. The first post explained the difficulty workers had removing the rock and soil from the property.

"To date, the redeveloper has excavated and removed approximately 50,000 cubic yards of soil and rock. This translates into approximately 3,000 truckloads of material. We continue, weather permitting, to remove the balance of the material; rock and soil and estimate there are 6,000 to 8,000 cubic yards remaining to be hammered and removed. This is an on-going process and will be completed as the steel is delivered and we work ourselves out of the hole onto Glen Street," is still posted on the website as of Aug. 19.

The most recent update, which is from June 5, states that plumbers were "on site installing drain stacks throughout garage levels connecting to ground level drainage system."

No new updates have been posted since.

Developer Fred Daibes of Towne Centre Urban Renewal Company, LLC did not return phone calls by press deadline.
