Loesser 7/17/09 letter to EV re: Waterford resolution

Polling location is a political ploy

TO THE EDITOR:
Recently the Edgewater Mayor and Council saw fit to enact a resolution that maintains using Waterford Towers as an official polling place and repudiating two citizens who spoke up against it.

The Waterford has been a gold mine for the local Democrats, who have enjoyed unlimited access to its residents for many years, while, under the rationale of keeping the place a gated, private community, have refused entrance to any political candidates from other parties.

In the old days, local Democrats chauffeured the 300 plus elderly residents of Waterford Towers to their District 4 polling place on Hilliard Avenue. But this obviously proved too onerous a task, so plans were made to make everyone1s life simpler by creating a polling place right inside the building.

This solution would seem logical and fair if you don't know how much effort the Democrats expend to assure that the vast majority of Waterford Tower votes continue to be cast in their favor. Yoga, reading groups, Thanksgiving turkeys, concerts, lectures and so forth are provided continually all year long to the residents of this age-restricted complex by the Democrats. Since the opposition is not permitted contact with the residents, they hear only one voice, assume no one else cares about them, and vote accordingly. It is a clever strategy by the local Democrats, and those 300-plus votes are essential to them to keep their local power. Having the voters’ voting booths within steps of their home is another smart move. When Valory Bardinas and Mary Hogan objected to this as a political ploy, they were portrayed as being against the senior citizens.

Business as usual in Edgewater.

Don't forget the Democrats also had themselves a candidate that resides in Waterford and he ran around the building on the day he was up for election and other elections and bangs on his elderly neighbors' doors and bullies them into voting, and from what I've heard by residents of Waterford that I met while standing OUTSIDE Waterford behind the official line that you are allowed to be on Election Day and no closer to the voting site, he tells them they have to vote for the Dems otherwise they will lose their apartments and other services from the community. They seemed to be pretty much terrified of this guy.

It's funny Independence Harbour found this site to air their concerns, too bad the residents in Waterford don't have a place they can voice their concerns, but of course if the people in Independence Harbour actually got out the vote and supported the Independent Coalition for a Better Edgewater, like they promise to do every year, but somehow just can't make it across the street, we might be able to solve both sets of problems. Maybe someone at Independence Harbour can organize their people to vote for the Coalition via absentee ballot, that might make it easier on their schedules, and help us get the much needed change we need in this community, instead of business as usual.

The former Democratic mayor was a resident of Independence Harbour and Democratic Councilman Ludwig, held an apartment there in order to run and hold office, maybe some of those who are unhappy with their present situation may want to consider running for Council with the Independents to affect real change for their complex and the entire town, since their problems seems to mirror each other.
