Re: Notes Around the Borough

We are sure many have noticed quite a quantity of political signs posted on public property here in Edgewater before, during and now after the elections. Some may remember just a couple of years ago the Borough Council outlawing this practice, in an obvious jab at the Independents.

When the matter was called to the attention of the appropriate Borough officials, the response was that it was noted and they would get around to taking them down. We guess that meant, after they had their desired effect. And we guess it also meant that it wasn't really very important this election, as no Independents were running or posting signs.

Look on the bright side, there were no Independent signs to be defaced or removed, as has been common, even when on private property and perfectly legal.

Re: Notes Around the Borough

We have noticed to our amazement a padlock finally put in place on the north gate to the Octagon property, probably bringing it into compliance with Borough ordinances, at least on one side of the property.

Still see around the Borough other "barriers", fences, gates tied with yellow caution ribbons, bungee cords, etc., and fences that don't prevent access to demolition and construction sites and abandoned empty buildings. How wise is it for a property owner to avoid a few dollars of expense, while exposing him or herself to enormous liability? How wise is it for the Borough to decide not to enforce its own ordinances, exposing the citizen/taxpayer to liability and the Borough's children (and adults) to danger?

Re: Notes Around the Borough

Be very careful when crossing River Road anywhere.
Drivers continue to drive through red lights.
It is best to stay on those little red cut-outs until all traffic is for sure stopped.

Re: Notes Around the Borough

We're sure all have been reading the stories in the Record about the startling number of pedestrians being killed or injured in encounters with vehicles. The article titled "Road Warrior; Danger to Pedestrians" in the Nov. 10 Record reported 3 pedestrian deaths per week in NJ. 595 pedestrians have died over the last 4 years.

After reading that article, yesterday morning we watched in alarm as a young woman pushing a stroller with baby aboard began crossing east on River Road at Russell, with the walk light, and a car turned south from the parking lot exit. We thought surely the woman driving the car would stop, but no...she looked at the woman with stroller and sped up, barely missing the sign in the middle of the street that reminds drivers to stop for pedestrians.

Believe we need some of the "decoy cops" used last year in Montclair and South Orange.

Re: Notes Around the Borough

I tried to cross River Road, from the parking lot to the Municipal Bldg., the other day and could not get across safely. Luckily, a crossing guard was on duty. She stopped traffic so I could cross RiverRoad without being mowed down. What is going on with drivers these days? They seem oblivious to safe driving rules. River Road has become a speedway with "anything goes, and goes fast" the new rule.

Re: Notes Around the Borough

If they had re-built River Road the way it was planned and the way Neda Rose lied to us that it would be built then we wouldn't have these problems.

All the talk of calming agents to slow traffic. It should have bee re-done like a large boulevard with islands and maybe a couple of circles to slow down traffic. But no, that's too much like right. Now we are going to stand by while they rip up all the beautiful old trees that line the Veteran's Park for a sidewalk that could just as easily be placed on the field side of the trees as opposed to the road side but this will give them entree into widening River Road and make it more of highway.

People should wake up and realize that the powers that be don't give a damn about quality of life, they do what they are told following orders from above (and I don't mean God in heaven, quite the opposite).

Neda Roses' Tree City? They'll rip up the trees widen River Road and then astro-turf the ballfield, but keep in mind Ms. Rose drives a hybrid so destroying the environment on such a high level somehow balances out in her pea brain. Congratulations Edgewater, you get the government you deserve.

Re: Notes Around the Borough

Out our front windows we are seeing three helicopters hovering over the Hudson, or Manhattan. Have just seen on the news there has been a major accident on the West Side Highway...south bound. Several vehicles involved. Lots of delays, up to, and probably across the GW bridge.

Re: Notes Around the Borough

Half of the problem is the pedestrians ignoring the crossing lights that apply to them. The big red hand means "stop". If you walk into the middle of the street against a don't walk sign, take responsibility for being stupid and the results of that stupidity.

True enough, but experiences posted here have been when the pedestrian had the walk light...at least what we have experienced and what we have observed.

I thought the pedestrian always has the right of way?

Re: Notes Around the Borough

Generally seems to be the law everywhere in these United States, with variations.

The NJ code does place responsibility on pedestrians to cross at proper places and safely. As it says however, nothing in the code absolves the driver from exercising due care. Seems to be a recognition that in a confontation between human flesh and auto steel, the steel will usually win, thus gives a bit of an advantage to the human flesh, even when occupied by a weak or careless mind.

Here is part of the code: For the entire text, go to website
http://www.lawrev.state.nj.us/title3...s%20021408.pdf

39A:PED-7. Exceptions to pedestrian right of way; pedestrian responsibilities
a. The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the
highway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except:
(1) When the movement of traffic is being regulated by police officers or
traffic control signals;
(2) Where otherwise prohibited by municipal, county, or State regulation;
or
(3) Where a pedestrian tunnel or overhead pedestrian crossing has been
provided. A pedestrian crossing a highway at a point where a pedestrian tunnel or
overhead pedestrian crossing has been provided shall yield the right of way to all
vehicles on the highway.
b. Nothing in this chapter shall relieve a pedestrian from using due care for the
pedestrianís own safety. No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of
safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for
the driver to yield.
c. When a vehicle is stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the highway, the
driver of another vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such
stopped vehicle.

d. Every pedestrian upon a highway at any point other than within a marked or
unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon
the highway.
e. Nothing in this chapter shall relieve a driver from the duty to exercise due care
for the safety of any pedestrian upon a highway.

f. Violation of this chapter is a class D offense.
g. Of each fine collected for violation of this section, $50 shall be forwarded to
the State Treasurer who shall annually deposit the moneys into the "Pedestrian Safety
Enforcement and Education Fund" created by 39:4-36.2.
Source: 39:4-36; 39:4-36.1.
