Re: Veterans Field Update

All this information is helpful, and it is good to know that there are still some people who care, however, most people in this town do not understand that unless they "show up" by attending council meetings, nothing will change.

Unfortunately, the current Mayor and council's only concern is maximizing their favored developer's profit margin.

This mandate includes NOT remediating Veteran's field to the highest standard. Instead, appointed mayor Michael mcPartland, councilmen Henwood, Vidal's, Monte, Bartolameo, and newly appointed council woman, Deloris Lawlor, have voted to allow Veteran's Park to be CAPPED, wherever the water table is encountered.
It should be noted that the fill that was dumped in Veteran' s Park by Waterside Construction was so high in toxins that the fill had to be deluted to get an actual reading. It was testing off the chart.

Additionally, this mayor and council is trying to hid the fact that high levels of contaminates were discovered in Edgewater's cemetery.
How do these guys sleep at night. They are risking our children's health for someone's profit margin

Re: Veterans Field Update

What goes around...comes around

So much concern for those children who are physically challenged and yet they'll subject them to toxic waste (via recycled rubber tires) and the contaminants already present and added to at Veteran's Park. Let's add the burden of cancer or some other auto-immune disease to a child who already faces many difficult obstacles in life.

Who are they kidding but themselves?

Dani:

The law firm I worked for many years ago represented an insurance company involved in the asbestos litigation. There were family members of the people who died from asbestosis because the father brought home his work clothes and they were washed with the family clothes.

This article should scare all parents who have children that will play on the field, who will bring home the rubber pieces on their shoes, that will then be deposited on the family rugs and where younger siblings crawl around.

As far as I know, all little ones put things they find into their mouths. So I guess in 20 years or so they will discover that these kids have ingested the rubber pieces from the artificial turf.

We have all been "sold" a bill of goods.

Re: Veterans Field Update

I'm with you... there's not enough long term evidence to prove it's safe. Having read multiple reports, they all say the same thing - more long term study is needed.

In a town that's packed cliff to river with concrete, who couldn't use a little grass between their toes!

Tires

Since 1995, the BCUA has sponsored a Municipal Tire Recycling Program. With over 240 million tires being discarded every year, tires take up large amounts of landfill space unnecessarily and present an adverse environmental impact on our solid waste stream.

The Municipal Tire Recycling Program consists of four one-day tire amnesty collection days located throughout the county to allow residents to drop off tires for recycling.

So, let's cover the Little League field with a product that uses a known toxic waste and calls it recycling.

The Council in it's infinite wisdom has decided to cover toxic waste with more toxic waste.

Washington Twnship is fighting covering their children's fields with astro-turf, Cresskill's parents are dead set against it. the list goes on.

I truly hope no one gets an environmental disease.

But, guessing from the lack of interest and input, most parents in Edgewater don't mind.

Re: Veterans Field Update

Price tag on fixing Edgewater field rises 30 percent

EDGEWATER - The price tag of remediating and renovating Veterans Field is increasing by 30 percent, from $13.7 million to $19.7 million, after the contractor for the project found additional contaminated fill that needs to be removed.

Along with a previous change order, the extra work, which includes more soil testing, has upped the original $5 million contract the borough awarded to Enterprise Network Resolutions Contracting LLC last fall to $6.1 million.

The company has been tasked with removing the contaminated crushed concrete and other fill its predecessor trucked onto the field in 2013 and making various other improvements to the park.

Borough Attorney Joseph Mariniello said the additional work contained in the second change order would not be bid out to another contractor in order to keep the project on schedule and prevent any disruptions to the ongoing construction activity on the field.

"No [council] member likes change orders but they have to be done depending on what they find when they're digging up something and that's basically what happened," he said.

The amendment in the contract meets all legal requirements and will be reported to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs since the increase exceeds 20 percent, according to Mariniello.

Borough officials said they hoped to eventually recoup the rising cost of cleaning up Veterans Field, now entering its fourth year of closure, from Waterside Construction LLC, the company that re-contaminated the park after being hired by the borough to remove toxic historic fill from the site.

The borough is currently suing Waterside and other parties it deems responsible for the incident in federal court.

"Hopefully we'll prevail and get that [money] back," said Councilman Michael Henwood.

Re: Veterans Field Update

But don't ask any questions regarding the field because they'll either try to silence you or maybe try to beat the crap out you, because they're such classy professionals, just asking a simple question embarrasses them.

Hopefully we'll recoup the money? Really?

Re: Veterans Field Update

Well, it cost me $75.00 to get copies of the documents as to how we spent the money and how much we spent!

Of course, we have been asking for this information at EVERY MEETING for MONTHS and MONTHS and get no response. The Borough attorneys' advice: "OPRA it". Which I did and I am now out personally $75.00 for information that should have been provided to the public at the "public" council meetings. I know I'll never get that back!

Telling us (or rather the reporter) that Councilman Henwood hopes we get the money back, is kinda like saying during the election that "we will clean up Veteran's Field to the highest level" and 30 days after the election, vote to leave the contamination there to save us money --- even though we are not going to have to pay for it, Right Mr. Henwood. So who are we saving the money for??

They pass the ordinance tonight if you want to give any comments on it.

Katie,
I'm so sorry for Billy had to endure. I can't believe that he was beat up by a member of the governing body simply for not buying into the ******** served at the council meetings.
Low life thugs.
