Hogan letter to EV re: denied use of Veterans Field

This was published June 9, 2006.

ICBE should be allowed to use Veterans Field

TO THE EDITOR:
At last Tuesday's mayor and council meeting there was a resolution on the agenda to allow the Independent Coalition for a Better Edgewater's (ICBE) House and Garden committee to use the lawn in front of the Community Center to distribute its maps and sell tour tickets for its fifth annual House and Garden Tour on June 25.

This is the successful event that has been held for five years that brings home and garden "treasures" to Edgewater residents and beyond. Veteran's Field has always been the site for distribution of the maps with its views of the river, the Peace Garden and, ample parking.

This resolution was tabled by the Democratic majority — council people David Jordan, Maureen Holtje and Neda Rose — in an effort to stop the event from happening this year since information regarding the location to pick up maps/tickets for the event should have been sent to newspapers the next day.

We have all long known that Councilwoman Rose uses Edgewater's Art Festival as a political point of reference. No one has ever stood on her stage at the festival that wasn't a Democrat (even though Republican, Green Party and Independent elected officials were in the crowd).

But the Arts Festival is a positive thing for Edgewater. It brings in people, artists, etc., to the town. So everyone ignores the political overtones, the donation of the town's DPW workers and police time and the town's $1,000 donation, for the positive things it brings to Edgewater.

The ICBE's Hidden Treasures Tour does not ask for borough employees' time or money from the town. It is a group of residents of the town who feel that we should celebrate our history and its charming homes. The group begins meeting in February and the event is usually held in June — after the gardens are in full bloom. The money raised is used to support the coalition's newsletter.

How petty can the Democratic council be to deny this active group of residents the use of its own field. The only times Veteran's Field has been denied to a group is when the members don't live in town or it is not a business in town. The Hidden Treasures Tour isn't even asking for use of the field — only a place to set up to distribute its maps and tickets.

It is such a small thing. But it speaks mountains of the lack of cooperation and respect that Edgewater Democratic council members have for the residents of Edgewater.

Re: Hogan letter to EV re: denied use of Veterans Field

Where will the check-in for the tour be?

The House and Garden tour is such a wonderful advertisement for the best of Edgewater. I am appalled that the icbe was denied a space in front of the community center, which is a nice safe place for cars to pull in and next to Veteran's Field, which is something that any visitor should see. This is petty and hurts the town.

What reason did the council members give for not considering what has caused no problem in the past?

Re: Hogan letter to EV re: denied use of Veterans Field

At last nights council meeting the council voted to allow the ICBE, as it has done in the past, to use Veterans Field for the House tour.

I stated my position and that is "any tax paying citizen of Edgewater be they Democrat, Republican, Green party, should be permitted to use the field, with permission, for any legal activity. Fund raising for legal causes, political or otherwise, has always taken place in public spaces. It is the American way"

The resolution was tabled at the last meeting, which was if everyone recalls, quite out of order. The reasons : we needed clairification of Ms Robbio's proposed ordinance outlawing policital fund raising in the field. How do you propose limiting the use of a field , then request it. Everyone knows money goes from the ICBE to their candidates, just as Republican and Democratic monies flows to their candidates, done under Election Law rules this is perfectly legal for all parties.

Also, how many times has Ms Bardinas loudly proclaimed she will not vote for something she was handed at the meeting, with no time to read the resolution before hand? This is exactly what happened with the ICBE resolution, none of us saw it before hand. Sauce for the goose?

Neda, Thanks for clarifying. This is why I love this board: all the news, all the time. On the other board, we'd only get one side of any story.

Dear Neda:

It was an interesting political spin the democratic elected officials threw out last night and your vain attempt to try to come up with some reason to justify your total denial of the rights of Edgewater citizens who happen to be members of the I.C.B.E. House and Garden committee. The ‘egg on the face’ was quite apparent. As elected officials you should keep personal differences and petty hatreds out of any vote - no matter who is the person proposing the resolution. Tut, Tut!

What has Councilwoman Robbio’s “pay to play” ordinance and the request by the House and Garden Tour committee to use the space in front of the Community Center to distribute maps and sell tickets got to do with one another? Yoga really does help you with your stretching!

If you don't care who uses the field (your grandstanding last night) then why did you table the House and Garden committee’s request at the last meeting? There was no mention of the “pay to play “ordinance which the democrats had tabled so long ago. In fact it has never been mentioned again. You buried it! Now suddenly you try to resurrect a small part of it to discredit a wonderful annual event that the whole town celebrates – like your Arts Festival. It would be nice to think that someday you may just “untable” Councilwoman Robbio’s “pay to play” ordinance and discuss it.

And, by the way, the committee’s request was a resolution on the agenda and not a motion made from the floor. Was it really going to take you so much time to figure out a request that you have approved 4 years in a row?

Re: Hogan letter to EV re: denied use of Veterans Field

This is hysterical, the Democrat majority council members vote to table a resolution for use of (small portion) of space in Veterans Field, by the Independent Coalition For a Better Edgewater, to distribute maps and sell tickets for the Edgewater House and Garden Tour. When they realize that they violated our rights (tax paying residents of Edgewater)they back track and try to put the blame on a resolution which banned "Pay to Play", and fundraising for political campaigns on public property.
This is where it gets really hysterical, the "Pay to Play" resolution was also tabled by none other than the Democrat majority council members!
Neda's little speech at the end of the vote is not fooling anyone, we are used to her talking out of both sides of her mouth. If she really believes in democracy she should NOT have voted to table a motion for use of Veterans Field. It is just like her ferry vote several years ago, first she votes "no ferry service at the Grand Cove Marina" then she re-invents herself and denies her past position.
Who are you today Sybil?

Valory, why are we surprised: Since she got into politics Neda has managed to be on all sides of the issue, every issue, all the time. This is the main reason why, after a number of months of watching her in action, most people lose confidence in her leadership and her word.

You cannot be for preserving open space and then build a ferry terminal as she has done. You cannot be for defending quality of life and then never meet a developer plan that she doesn't absolutely gush over. You cannot be for creating a community in Shadyside and then watch over years, YEARS, while this part of town falls deeper in the shadows and further under water...as she has done. And you cannot create organizations that you claim are non-political while you use same organization to reward your friends and then not recognize the people who did the work because you disagree with their politics.

No, the people will ask in the next election "What do you stand for?" And standing on all sides of the issue, in a vain attempt to please everyone, will no longer be accepted as an answer. Bruce Doneff
